Become a Gym Instructor

This course allows you to work in a gym as a gym instructor and group fitness instructor to become an fitness instructor.

To become a gym instructor:

1. Complete certificate III in Fitness
2. Complete a Level II or equivalent First Aid course
3. Register with one of the national registration bodies (Physical Activity Australia or Fitness Australia). You will need to present them with photocopies of the certificates you receive in 1 and 2 above.

Why do people undertake this qualification?

The Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package outlines that this qualification reflects the role of instructors who perform a range of activities and functions within the fitness industry. Depending on the specialisation chosen, this qualification provides a pathway to work as an instructor providing exercise instruction for group, aqua or gym programs.  They work independently with some level of autonomy in a controlled environment such as fitness, leisure, aquatic and community centres where risks are managed through pre-existing risk assessment and hazard control processes.

  • Individuals who specialise in Aqua Exercise Instruction deliver water-based exercise sessions designed for participation by a group of clients. Sessions may be freestyle, pre-choreographed or circuit style. They also have the skills to rescue a client in distress, and an appropriate level of pool deck fitness and endurance.
  • Individuals who specialise in Group Exercise Instruction deliver exercise sessions designed for participation by a group of clients with a mix of ages/fitness levels. Sessions may be freestyle, pre-choreographed or circuit style. These individuals instruct and demonstrate complete exercise sessions to groups with limited individual interaction.
  • Individuals who specialise in Gym Instruction provide individually tailored client assessments, provide technique correction as needed, and develop and demonstrate programs. They also provide supervision of a facility or service, keep equipment clean, tidy and well maintained, and handle various customer inquiries.

Efit Academy's expertise is in the provision of the Gym Instruction specialised units to help a student obtain registration as a Gym Instructor.

Once a student has successfully completed this qualification. A student is recommended to obtain registration as a Fitness Instructor and this registration can be obtained from either Fitness Australia or Physical Activities Australia, which are the two current Fitness Industry peak bodies which handle registration of Fitness Instructors.

How many units do I need to complete for this qualification?

To successfully complete the SIS30315 Certificate III in Fitness you will need to complete a total of 16 units, which consist of 9 Core and 7 Elective units.

HLTAID003 Provide First Aid. Please note a student is required to obtain this certificate from another Registered Training Organisation (RTO) during the completion of module 1. We will guide you in choosing the most suitable RTO to obtain your First Aid Certificate.

The reason we don't deliver the First Aid Certificate is because we believe that we are fitness industry experts and pioneers and not First Aid experts. So we let the experts who specialise in the First do this for you.

What are the pre-requisites or prior things I should have to be able to gain entry into this qualification

There are no pre-requisites to enrol in this qualification. All we ask is you have a passion for Fitness and a genuine desire to learn and grow.

This type of student is expected to take up to 1-2 years to complete this qualification as they do not have any prior experience or have not undertaken any prior studies in the area of Fitness.
Individuals wanting to gain registration with Fitness Australia or Physical Activity Australia as a Fitness Instructor as the first step of becoming a Personal Trainer. 1 to 1.5 years. This type of student is expected to complete this qualification anywhere between 1 to 1.5 years as this type of student tends to have experience in the Fitness area and are doing this course to begin their first step then obtain registration as a Registered Fitness Instructor.
Individuals wishing to formalise existing skills and workplace tasks with existing experience in the fitness industry. 0.8 to 1.3 year. This type of student is expected to complete this qualification in 0.8 to 1.3 year timeframe as this type of student is currently employed in the field of Fitness or has a strong sporting background or coaching background thus they are able to complete this qualification at a much quicker rate.

Brief Description
Online Exams These contain multiple choice, drag and drop, match a name to an image type of questions. The good part is the online exam is marked instantly and it tells you which questions you got wrong and which ones you got right and gives you another chance to correct your answers.
Observations This requires you to either conduct an observation of someone else do a physical activity and include your responses in a checklist or you need to get someone else to observe you complete physical activities and get them to include their responses into a checklist.
Practical-Portfolio Of Information This requires you to undertake practical fitness activities and create a portfolio of evidence to support you undertaking these practical activities.
Work Placement Log Book To successfully complete a SIS30315 Certificate III in Fitness you are now required to undertake 30 hours of work placement at a gym or similar type of facility. This requires you complete a Work Placement Log Book.

Are there any guarantees that I will complete this qualifications?

How do I enrol in the SIS30315 Certificate III in Fitness?

Efit has a unique enrolment process in which once you express interest in enrolling in one of our Fitness Qualifications, we organise a time with you and conduct a what we call is a pre-training review with you. We do this to make sure the qualification you are interested in is the best for you and to assess whether you will be able to complete this qualification. We don't enrol individuals into qualifications that are not suitable for them, unlike other providers that will enrol people into courses for the sake of it and just for the money.

We then complete an enrolment form and get you to provide the necessary identification documents required to complete the enrolment process. We then give you a Letter Of Offer which outlines our arrangements with you and then you need to accept that Letter Of Offer in writing to complete your enrolment process.

You will also be required to provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number. If you don't have a USI or don't know anything about a USI we can help you get one. What is the cost of undertaking this qualification?
